| Waimarama
is the name bestowed on the Lodge by its first owners. The word is
from the language of the Tangata
Whenua, the indigenous people of the land, and means “Moon
Over the Water”. It evokes the moonlight that plays at night
over the rippling waters of the magnificent Tongariro River. One of the finest trout fisheries in the world, the river literally flows by the entrance to the Lodge. |

The Lodge House in Spring
|
For
many years the Lodge was the home and surgery of the first doctor
in the local community, Dr Ron Kennedy. The Doctor’s passion for
books was the genesis of the substantial library that is still
available for the enjoyment of Lodge guests. Though he passed away
some time ago, Dr Kennedy is remembered with affection by many
people in the district, and even today the Lodge is known by
locals as “Ron Kennedy’s place”. The house was one of the
first substantial homes built on the banks of the Tongariro
in the early 1930’s and the Doctor is still thought by many to
have picked the best spot on the river for his home. Waimarama
has history, charm and the ambience of a home out of a more
relaxed era, though with all the contemporary comforts demanded by
discerning guests.

The
Lodge is sheltered beneath mature trees, many of which were
planted by Dr Kennedy and have been tended over the last 15 years
by Gianni (Johnny), Waimarama’s
Italian gardener. The house is a landmark on the Tongariro
riverbank, not least because of the towering Copper Beech tree
that marks the entrance to the property and is one of Dr
Kennedy’s notable legacies.

This
is a special place which its owners love to share with friends and
family. They hope that in whatever pastimes you pursue here, Waimarama will impart a tranquility that remains with you long after
you depart.
