The community of Turangi, in which Waimarama Lodge is located, boasts of being the trout fishing capital of the world. There are ample opportunities for fly
fishing on the Tongariro
and the many other reaches of water that flow into Lake Taupo.
The Tongariro is on your
door step at Waimarama, but
all of the surrounding rivers and streams, such as the Tauranga-Taupo,
the Hinemaiaia and Waitahanui
are easily reached by a short drive from the Lodge. Most rivers
and streams are open for fishing (at least in some areas) throughout
the year. The lake itself also rewards anglers who prefer fishing
deeper waters.
Trout
fishing is only one of the many activities and attractions that
abound in the vicinity of the Lodge.
The Central North Island ski slopes of Turoa and Whakakapapa are a mere 40 kilometres from Turangi and the nearby Tongariro National Park offers the chance to walk the Tongariro Crossing and view the pristine environment of a heritage park of international reputation. Mountain
biking the many trails around the Lodge is especially popular.
Lake Taupo and its surrounding
areas are one of the adventure centres of the North Island offering
everything from tandem sky diving, to bungy jumping, to four wheel
driving and much more. All are within a few minutes drive of Waimarama Lodge.
For
those less inclined to outdoor pursuits, the shops and galleries of Taupo
are within easy reach and other attractions such as the New
Zealand Army Museum at Waiouru, the hot pools at
Tokaanu and the Great Lake Arts Centre will reward a visit.
Guests at Waimarama are
provided with a comprehensive guide to the attractions of the
region.
